Liturgy Museum of the Catholic University of Korea

 

The Museum was established in May 1989 in order to establish the proper recognition and succession of the traditional philosophies of Korea and re-establish the historical mission of the Catholic churches in Korea. This Museum not only presents and provide the convenience of viewing the research data to the students, professors and general public by organizing and preserving the relics of folk cultures and relics of the Catholic church in Korea, but also putting in efforts to make contributions towards the understanding of academic researches on national cultures by collecting, preserving and exhibiting tangible and intangible cultural assets in a wide range of areas continuously.

 

By exhibiting the liturgy devices and ceremonial garments of the Catholic Church that the University has been preserving from generation to generation, it has established the requisites as a liturgy museum of Catholic university. Since then, this Museum has been planning and operating detailed exhibition rooms for various pavilions including History Pavilion, Liturgy Pavilion, Doctrine Material Pavilion, Arts Pavilion and Folklore Pavilion until now.

 

Recently, the Liturgy Pavilion was recently expanded with the donation of more than 230 items of ceremonial garments and utensils from the Jeoldusan Mt. Catholic Martyrs’ Shrine. The Museum preserves earthenware, roof-end tiles and bronze artifacts of the ancient and medieval era of Korea as well as a total of 2,026 relics including folk arts, antique books and literatures, etc. of the Joseon Dynasty donated by Insoon Ludgardis Kim in February 1989 as the collections of the Museum.

 

The Liturgy Museum shall continuously collect, organize, preserve and research traditional cultural heritages within the Catholic Churches of Korea that can easily be forgotten in the midst of the modern civilization, and put utmost efforts to succeed the traditions of the folk cultures of Korea and make contributions towards the naturalization of the Catholic Churches of Korea.
