Catholic Kwandong University Museum

Catholic Kwandong University Museum situated in the midst of green pine tree forest strives to establish living cultural school with the dream of harmonious life between the nature and mankind.

Our Museum was established with more than 100 relics excavated from the historical remains of the Bronze Age in Ponam-dong, Gangneug in 1964. Since its opening in 1976 as a folklore museum, the Museum was expanded and reopened in an independent building in April 2004 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the University.

Our Museum holds approximately 7,000 relics that illustrate the cultural characteristics of the Yeongdong region very well. In particular, the Museum is characterized not only by archaeological relics but also by the abundant folklore materials that illustrate the livelihood of the local residents who lived the lives of isolation by being caged by the Baekdu Mountain Range with high elevations. Accordingly, the visitors can appreciate a diverse range of traditional cultural heritages of the Yeongdong region. In addition, epigraphic materials that contain the soul of Korean people who valued the importance of making records are renowned for their diversity in contents ranging from the recordings since the Era of the Three States to Joseon Dynasty.

Our Museum is equipped with 4 full-time exhibition halls including Ancient Arts Hall, Daily Life Folklore Hall, Calligraphy and Drawings Hall, and School History Hall and 1 special exhibition hall, which are open to the general public.

Our Museum is planning to play the role as the venue for historical culture of the local society, survey and research center for local cultures, and venue for social education. We look forward to your frequent visit with extensive concerns and affection.
