The Natural History Museum of Ewha Women’s University

 

The Natural History Museum of Ewha Women’s University is the first natural history museum established in Korea on November 20, 1969 with the goals of making contributions towards the school and social education on nature.

 

Natural History Museum is the living venue of education of natural history that enables the visitors to easily experience nature in urban center through the Diorama Exhibition that reproduced the actual natural ecosystem along with the display of a diverse range of specimens of animals, plans, rocks, minerals and fossils, Ecology Corner for observation of living animals and exhibition of the latest exhibition technique such as audio-visual facility to encounter the natural environment via videos, etc.

 

The Museum is pursuing pure academic researches related to natural history, collection, preservation, exhibition and researches on animal, plant, mineral, rocks and fossils as well as investigation of organisms on the verge of extinction. Moreover the Museum holds and exhibits multiple numbers of rare specimens including natural monuments, internationally protected birds, and special, rare and new species of organisms. Valuable specimens of natural history are stored in the collection warehouse equipped with the latest facilities including thermohygrostatic facility and used as research materials. In addition, we are operating a diverse range of science exploration experiments, and nature observation programs such as natural history class and on-site learning and education program, as well as special lectures for the students.

Exhibitions are composed of the permanent exhibitions made up of display units for plants, insect, invertebrates, vertebrates, earth science, diorama and ecology, and planned exhibitions held by selecting themes for each of the areas every year. The Museum executed in-depth exhibitions for each of the areas of natural history by holding a total of 12 specially planned exhibitions until now.

 

Moreover, our Museum is leading in the provision of information service on the materials held by the Museum by opening cyber Natural History Museum along with the development of a website and web contents on natural monuments, as well as the endangered and protected species.
