Busan City Museum

Our Museum opened in 1978 and has as extensive history as other public museums in various locations in Korea. However, with the passage of time, the facilities became dilapidated and too small, making it insufficient as the symbol of the pride of the citizens and to highlight the identity of Busan that is growing as a globally renowned metropolis. Accordingly, the Museum put efforts to fulfill the demands and desires of the citizens for culture by newly constructing a second pavilion in 2002 on the basis of the relics secured through excavation, donation and purchasing thus far.

Relics exhibited and held by the Museum are precious materials that illustrate the history and characteristics of the cultures of Busan from the prehistoric age to present. Moreover, these are the evidences that show who we are today and treasures for creation of wisdom that will reveal the path we need to tread in the future.

Our Museum strives to fulfill our functions and roles as a comprehensive museum through the collection, preservation, research and exhibition of materials on traditional cultures related to our region. We will also operate a wide range of educational and cultural programs that our citizens can be satisfied with in order to become a historical and cultural venue that everyone enjoys visiting. In addition, we shall strive to put in our utmost efforts to become a museum that is appropriate for the status of Busan as the “largest harbor city in Northeast Asia” by activating multifaceted domestic and international exchanges.
