Mungyeong Coal Museum

Mungyeong Coal Museum is located in #112 Wangneung-gil, Gaeun-eup, Mungyeong City, Gyeongbuk and exhibits approximately 6,730 relics including mining equipment, minerals and fossils, blueprints, documents and literatures, etc.

Mungyeong City was the home for the 2nd largest coalfield in Korea and development of coal mines began since 1938 as ‘Eunseong Anthracite Mine’ during the period of military occupation of Korea by Japan. Since then, coals were mined for almost 60 years and the mines were eventually closed in 1994 as the demands for coal decreased drastically. Historically, the benefits that coal gave us as fuel was literally like the blessing of god. Visitors can view the entire process of production of various types of briquettes by mining coal at the Museum and observe the relevant cultures of our daily lives as well as the chaotic and extremely arduous lives of the coal miners.
