The 21st century is frequently referred to as the era of culture. With the advent of the era of culture, our municipality is striving to put our utmost efforts to restore and have the splendid cultures of Daegaya be known widely in order to have 'Goryeong, the foremost municipality in cultural tourism' be deeply engraved in the hearts of all the people. Daegaya Museum is the valuable outcome of such efforts we have been putting in.

As you are well aware of, Goryeong is the center of the prehistoric culture represented by petroglyphs and the former capital of Daegaya. Moreover, it is the site of cultures including Buddhist and Confucian cultures, etc. with prolonged history in which the traces of the lives and wisdom of our ancestors have harmonized. In particular, Daegaya made substantial contributions towards the advancement of our ancient cultures by establishing independently characteristic cultures as evidence by invention of Gayageum (Korean zither with 12 strings), earthenware and ironware, and was a nation that grew into an ancient nation that was comparable with the Three States at the time, namely, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla. We believe that the residents of Goyeong in present day have the obligation to succeed and further advance the cultures of Daegaya.

Daegaya Museum, which was opened in April 2005, is composed of 'Daegaya Royal Tomb Exhibition Pavilion' that restored and recreated the Tomb No. 44 in Jisan-ri, which is the largest tomb that buried living attendants with the king who passed away and confirmed as such for the first time in Korea, during the ear of Daegaya, 'Daegaya History Pavilion' that comprehensively exhibits the history and cultures of Goryeong region with focus on Daegaya, and 'Ureuk Museum' that systematically shed new light on maestro musician Ureuk and Gayageum, etc. Daegaya Museum can be described in a word as the only ‘specialized museum on the history of Daegaya’ in the world where the visitors can view, listen and experience the outstanding cultures of Daegaya.

Since its opening, Daegaya Museum is evaluated highly favorably for the outstanding exhibition contents with heightened status by establishing itself as the center of ‘cultural tourism’ with flooding in of tourists. We shall continue to operate our Museum even more substantively by supplementing the exhibition facilities and securing more extensive range of relics.
