Seok Juseon Memorial Museum of Dankook University

 

Seok Juseon Memorial Museum of Dankook University, since its opening in 1967 as the central museum in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the University, has been putting efforts in the excavation and distribution of our history and cultures. Having executed survey on numerous remains annually since the opening, the Museum made enormous and meritorious contributions to the academic circle of history of Korea including excavation and surveying of Jeokseong Monument of Silla in Danyang (National Treasure No. 198) in 1978 and Goguryeo Monument in Chungju (National Treasure No. 205) in 1979, as well as sites in Gupyeong-ri in Sacheon, Mongchontoseong Earthen Fortress and site of Jinjeonsa Temple in Yangyang, etc. In 1981, the late Dr. Nansa Seok Ju Seon donated a total of 3,365 relics he collected throughout his life, thereby establishing the foundation for the opening of the Seok Juseon Memorial Folklore Museum.

 

The Folklore Museum established unparalleled status in the area of the traditional dress code of Korea through the activities of the collating and researches on the data and materials for the dress codes for children and excavated dress codes along with the organization of the donated relics. In March 1999, the Central Museum and the Seok Juseon Memorial Folklore Museum were merged into Seok Juseon Memorial Museum, thereby equipping itself with the status as a comprehensive museum that covers all the areas of antiquities and dress codes. Currently, the Museum holds approximately 40,000 pieces of relic with 100 relics in 11 categories including Autograph of Ahn Jung-geun (Treasure No. 569-21) and ceremonial jacket of princess Deogon (Important Folklore Cultural Asset No. 1), etc. designated as important folklore cultural assets.

 

Our Museum is equipped with the best facility as a university museum including 5 exhibition halls for holding of exhibitions in accordance with the characteristics of relics, and cutting-edge collection warehouse equipped with thermohygrostatic facilities and automatic fire extinction facility for the safe management of the relics. Recently, we are putting in efforts for social education and proliferation of culture through building up and disclosure of database on the collections of the Museum, holding of lectures for the local residents for communication with the local society and holding of fashion shows for children. Moreover, we are endeavoring to have the excellence of the Korean cultures be known widely throughout the world through linkage with Google Korea.

 

Our Museum shall continuously put in utmost efforts to further progress as an international university museum with the goal of having the excellence and beauty of Korean cultures be known widely throughout the world along with enhancing our role as a comprehensive cultural venue through exhibition, education and researches.
